Down Tilt is an esports organisation that was founded in 2016 as a branch of then studio, Salty Studios, after the business restructured Down Tilt was brought fully under the banner of the newly named, Smash Attack Studios. Primarily hosting events centred around the Smash Bros. series of fighting games, over the years the roster of games has expanded but more on that later. Return to Down Tilt events
by Down Tilt Admin
With COVID-19 restrictions loosening as of the 18th of May, we will be running small trial events to see how we can best get the venue organised to accommodate safe distancing and play. The admin teams for Tasmania have talked about a layered approach as a return to events.
Please read the attached announcement, we will have more details but the safety of others is paramount. As stated these events will help us determine, layout, times of the events, and more to best help those interested in playing.
It will be a multi layered approach to returning but for now the biggest key is focusing on keeping to the COVID-19 government restrictions. At any point that they change we will be putting the changes in to effect. It’s also paramount that players and interested parties practice just being overall safe in the matter.
If you are sick or believe yourself to be in contact with someone who is, please don’t attend events, we will also be using this time, as stated above, to re-evaluate the layout of the scene so we can put in the correct safety measures. Before the shutdown we were able to put in place safe 1.5m distances between players but we want to make sure we can do that more effectively moving forward.
We will update the scene as more news comes out but for now we are eager to take advantage of the relaxed rules to best help the scenes mental state.
Details about the restrictions in Tasmania can be found here: link
Resigning DT | Luma and DT | JP | PAZX
by Max Connell
In 2017, Down Tilt joined the esports scene in Australia with a focus on fighting games and grassroots growth within Tasmania and the country. We signed our first player, PAZX, after long conversations and trial run in the US. We have continued this relationship and will be moving forward into 2020 and beyond, but with the current state of the world and COVID-19 we have been supporting them in not just tournaments but in other ventures such as streaming and community building.
“DT | JP | PAZX and DT | Luma competing in a doubles set”
Firstly we will be talking about our longest player, DT | JP | PAZX, who joined us back in 2017. They are once again signing on with us in the 2020/21 seasons. As you may have noticed they have a second team in the name. JP is JP esports, a local Tasmania team, that operates like a crew of community members. During the initial COVID-19, PAZX teamed up with JP and has participated in some of their content creation. With all parties agreed we have allowed PAZX to stay on with JP as a crew member and represent DT at events. We are eager to help them grow as they compete in online tourneys and look at a return to streaming!
We also want to welcome back DT | Luma, after a stellar first year we have agreed to move forward with the partnership once again. Luma defines homegrown talent, sitting at the top of the Tas PR and being a defining force amongst the scene and its growth, we are happy to once again have them join the roster.
It’s going to be an exciting 2020/21 season but for now with everything on hold you can catch both PAZX and Luma competing at online events, catch them on various streams, and hopefully their own soon. We are eager to share more about the partnerships with Down Tilt and the growth we have planned once we return.
Tas PR Season 2
by Chins, MaxKiNG, Luma, Cap Supreme and Tezz
1. Luma
“Luma continues their dominance of the Tas scene with numerous wins and only one set loss all season. Their vice-grip on the scene remains strong moving forward.”
2. Anthonoot
”One of the most rock-solid and consistent players ever to enter the Tasmanian Smash scene, Anthonoot takes a comfortable second place this season. With many favourable player matchups in the scene and consistent top 3 appearances, few would dispute Anthonoot’s skill”.
3. Gerald
“Gerald maintains his spot as the top-placing North representative. A strong back-and-forth with the top ranking players sees him remain among the upper echelon as a premiere threat.“
4. Sayhnim
“Despite a rocky early start to the season, Sayhnim comes from behind to become an absolute force in the scene in only a matter of months. Comfortable against almost everyone, making him sweat proves a task in the current era of Tassie Smash.”
5. Ripto
“Ripto moves into the top 5 with some outstanding performances this season. His wins reinforced by his roster of well-practiced units makes him a threat to be wary of in the future.”
6. Cap Supreme
“Cap Supreme once again claims a PR spot with a solid overall season. The long-standing veteran shows that they are not to be trifled with, and with some great high-ranking player matchups, will be aiming to reclaim a spot in Top 5 next season.”
7. Chins
”Chins claims a spot on this season’s PR. He put up some great performances and took some great wins with his unorthodox characters and playstyle, but some lackluster performances in the South let him down from claiming a higher position.”
8. Kraw
“Kraw suffers quite a drop this season, but that is to say nothing of his gameplay. Ever the character specialist he always has been, Kraw is able to kick it with the best in the scene, despite having a couple of demons who held him back from the higher spots this season.“
9. BreadStick
“BreadStick returns to the top 10 this season. With some incredibly solid performances, BreadStick can make the top players sweat and will be looking to rise through the ranks next season.”
10. snoop dogg
“snoop sneaks in at 10th this season, sporting some high ranking wins and upsets. With a more solid roster of characters and greater dedication, it is expected that snoop will only go up from here.”
HM Trucks
“Trucks once again reveals himself as a hidden threat, being the only player to take a set from Luma this season. With more appearances, Trucks could claim a high placing in the rankings.“
HM. Mr. President
“The king of RNG, Mr. President claims an honorable mention on this season’s PR. His explosive and highly RNG-dependent playstyle has made even the greats sweat.”

Gerald: NorTAS has a boxing champion in the partnership of Gerald and Little Mac, holding an amazing record with an amazing head-to-head record overall the players on the rankings. Gerald has shown dedication through adversity with his Mac and midseason Joker to now his Chrom. Season 2 is shaping up to a big one for the champ.
DT | Luma: The undeniable number one player that Tasmania has produced for Ultimate, DT | Luma has shown his undeniable skill and tenacity with the game by maintaining a 100% win rate the entire season. A couple of close shaves but in the end, Luma has the right stuff to close it out and take the inaugural first place on the first Down Tilt Power Rankings.
So there you have it, the first-ever Down Tilt Power Rankings and our inaugural Top 10, again well done to all those who competed. Down Tilt Power Rankings Season 1 - Smash Ultimate Part 2
by DT | MaxKiNG, DT | Chins, DT | EH | Cap Supreme, DT | Luma andTezz
Part 2 is here so let’s jump straight in with places 7 through to 4, starting with:
BreadStick: Another returning Smash 4 veteran, BreadStick has shown great determination this season with his Olimar and towards the middle and end his Banjo and Mario. If he continues on the path he has been on there is no doubt a higher spot is on the cards for next season.
Ripto: One of SoTAS Smash 4 best has returned and is coming in all guns blazing, with a renewed love for the game and a drive and determination to achieve the goals he has, Ripto will be someone to watch out for as the seasons move forward.
DT | EH | Cap Supreme: An old hand and long-time NorTAS veteran, the Cap makes his mark this PR with his Wii Fit Trainer and Marth back up. Some great performances towards the end of the season show his true potential and no doubt see him aiming for a higher position next season.
Anthonoot: A new face to the scene, Anthonoot has come seemingly out of nowhere paired with Palutena and taking names left and right. Falling just short in the head-to-heads to achieve higher, if Anthonoot can get on top of those a higher spot is set up for sure.
Stay tuned for the final reveal of the top 3, follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
Down Tilt Power Rankings Season 1 - Smash Ultimate Part 1
by DT | MaxKiNG, DT | EH | Cap Supreme, DT | Luma and Tezz
It’s finally here, nearly one year since launch the first-ever Smash Bros. Ultimate Tas Power Rankings is out, it has been a triumphant journey to get here, from two separated scenes for so long to one unified region. New TO’s have risen, veterans have stood back and watched the new generation rise, as well as the growth in talent and interest in the game, Tasmania is ready to be put on the map. So without further ado, here is the first part of our reveal! Side note: please note the following art is a parody and we have nothing but love and respect for what the team at Panda Global does.
The Hidden Bosses: These are players who have shown exceptional skills this season but failed to meet the 10 by not meeting requirements as set by the panel. All of these players are great in their own right and represent a lot of the talent Tas as a region has to offer. From old hands to new players, if these players continue to play as they have been this last season they will no doubt be making the next DTR.
Tezz: “I don’t even play this game” the battle cry of Tezz since launch but they have shown their knowledge of fighting games and ability to make others play against themselves. Some very solid showings at the larger events have earned them a well-deserved spot on this list.
DT | MaxKiNG: The KiNG himself, the NorTAS TO has shown their skills in their pairing with Palutena. A diverse touring schedule that saw him attend almost every event and a variety of interstate events has seen strong growth in MaxKiNG as a player and a TO.
Varous: One of the many returning Smash 4 top performers from SoTAS who has shown great aptitude and skill in their return. With his go-to Donkey Kong and some Wario appearing, Various is no doubt set for a great run in Season 2 especially with other S4 players returning.
Check back later for more updates or follow us on Facebook or Twitter for the rest of the reveal!
North TAS Season 3 PR Reveal
by Max Connell, Jai Phillips, Khalil Tandler
Trucks - Ken (+/- 0)
Despite a lower attendance rate this season, Trucks still showed his dominant force winning most tournaments he attended and finishing with a strong head to head on all competitors. Anchored by his Ken, Trucks took on some unorthodox picks the season but overall once again has cemented his place at the top.
Gerald - Little Mac (+2)
After a tough back and forth season, Gerald has shown his strength with his Mac and Joker picks taking second this season. With a late-season shift to Chrom, Gerald has shown that when he picks a gameplan it can be deadly. Falling just short this season, Gerald will be aiming for that number one position next season.ME | EH | Cap Supreme - Wii Fit Trainer (+/- 0)
Consistency through victory, determination through defeat, through this Cap Supreme has once again shown why he is one of the best in the region. Known for the Wii Fit he did bust out the Marth in some cases but overall had a very strong season and will be looking to stay near the top.DT | Chins - Piranha Plant (-2)
Despite low turnouts, Chins takes enough mains to make a return appearance in top 5. With his unique style and unpredictable Hail Mary plays, it is unknown how far he can go in the future.Snoop - Snake (+1)
Snoop finally settles into a niche after a turbulent season, switching mains multiple times, before finally settling on the wild card pick of Ridley. Due to this, his ensemble of characters to play at a high level is growing vast, and next season the scene had better be wary of this veritable counterpick machine.Kharn - Greninja (+1)
Despite a less engaging season, Kharn still showed his knack for the game with solid placings and strong wins. Despite falling short of some higher placings, Kharn once again shows whilst he might not own the game, he knows how to play.WambySock - Pac Man (-2)
Wambysock didn’t play much this season, but when he did he got the job done. His solid Pac-Man proved to be the threat it had always been, and with more appearances, Wamby could reach for a higher placing.RNGoephph (+/- 0)
RNGoephph had an interesting season, throwing characters around and taking some unnecessary losses. Towards the end, however, he found his footing with some solid, consistent sets with his long-time main of Daisy, and if he stays on it he is expected to go far in the future as Mr President.DT | MaxKiNG (+1)
The long-standing Palutena main makes a strong recovery this season, with some great performances, some top 4 appearances and quality sets. Next season is shaping up to be a big one for the Goddess main.GandLaf (New)
GandLaf rockets into the number ten spot, with some insane high-level victories and crucial wins against PR players earning him his spot. with his well-practised Link, his main from Smash 4, working wonders against the scene, his crazy Pokémon Trainer, and even postseason with his fresh Terry pick, it can be expected to see GandLaf rise through the ranks.
Honourable Mentions: LargeMarge (Cloud), Zanthore (Joker) and G0D (Pit/Dark Pit)
Well done to all those who played this season, season four begins this November and will run til February 2020. For more information follow Salty Studios on Facebook or Twitter.
North TAS Season 2 PR Reveal
by Max Connell, Khalil Tandler, Jai Phillips, Ben Gamble
Season 2 is done and dusted here up north at what a great three months it has been. From players growing in their playstyles to all new mains and mixing it up, we have seen such a variety of players and an increase in interest amongst the scene and game.
Firstly, we want to thank all those who participated and came to our events, it was great to see returning faces as well as engaged new players who want to know more. We can’t wait to see where we can go from here.
But for now, here it is. Congratulations to all players who achieved a spot on the list, this season a lot was in the air and it came down to some tight end of season results. As for those vying for a spot. It was close and you aren’t far from hitting that target so keep persisting and we may see some all new faces next time.
*Please note that win rates include pools matches which allow flexibility in play style before reaching top 8 bracket. Bracket matches and head to head have been main considerations by the panel when deciding placings.
Big shout out to Cap Supreme who this season wanted to take on the challenge of creating the art
1. Trucks - Best Placing: 1st, Win Rate: 90%, Best Matchup: 13 - 0, Noticeable Wins: N/A
”Trucks can be summed up in one phrase, “Patch 3.1”. With the arrival of changes to Ken and Ryu we saw Trucks move back to the character he played at launch and in part in S4 with Ryu. Trucks has taken naturally to Ken and his string of wins and tournament victories is a testament to his dominance in the scene.”
2. Chins - Best Placing: 1st, Win Rate: 82%, Best Match Up: 7 - 0, Noticeable Wins: Trucks
“Despite minimal attendance, retains his top spot with great placings and character variety. Despite its perceived strength, Piranha Plant has been a solid pick for him this season, with its unorthodox play style confusing the scene. Hopefully with more results he can aim for the top spot.”
3. Cap Supreme - Best Placing: 1st, Win Rate: 66%, Best Match Up: 11 - 2, Noticeable Wins: Trucks and Chins
“The cap maintains his strong presence amongst the player base in the North. This season lead by his Wii Fit and backed up alongside by his Marth. Cap has once again shown his versatility and strength in overcoming a variety of situations presented before him. He will be aiming for that top spot in season three.”
4. Gerald- Best Placing: 1st, Win Rate: 72%, Best Match Up: 12 - 0, Noticeable Wins: Trucks, Cap and Chins
“Gerald performs consistently again this season, with even a tournament win earning him a higher position. His Incineroar continues to grow in strength and complexity, with a powerful Ganondorf pick in the back. With more placements similar to his best this season, he can make the top spots in the next.”
5. WambySock - Best Placing: 2nd, Win Rate: 74%, Best Match Up: 4 - 0, Noticeable Wins: Gerald and Cap Supreme
“Despite not showing up to as many tournaments this season, Wamby has still shown what a dominant force he can be when he arrives. With his wide range of characters lead by his explosive Pac-Man, Wamby will be aiming for that top three spot.”
6. Snoop - Best Placing: 2nd, Win Rate: 68%, Best Match Up: 9 - 0, Noticeable Wins: Chins, Cap Supreme and Gerald
“Snoop has finally settled into a niche within the scene, with his Pokemon Trainer pick late into the season. While low attendance inhibited his reach for the top spots, some high level wins and placements earn him a higher position than last season. If he appears more often next season, he could surely reach the higher spots.”
7. Kharn - Best Placing: 3rd, Win Rate: 65%, Best Match Up: 6 - 3, Noticeable Wins: N/A
“Another player who hasn’t really been to many events but when he did show off his talent with his Greninja and ROB it was always a set worth watching. Kharn’s wealth of knowledge in fighting games once again shines through as his ability to adapt and read opponents has kept in him the competitive loop.”
8. RNGeoff - Best Placing: 2nd, Win Rate: 55%, Best Match Up: 11 - 2, Noticeable Wins: Wamby, Snoop and Kharn
“RNGeoff, the man of many names, brings another consistent performance to the table this season. Over the course of the season he strengthened his character roster, though ultimately was unable to make any outstanding wins compared to his peers causing him to drop spots. If he can perform well next season with a few high placements he will be able to reclaim his higher placing.”
9. LargeMarge - Best Placing: 4th, Win Rate: 44%, Best Match Up: 11 - 0, Noticeable Wins: Cap Supreme and RNGeoff
“What a season Marge has had, going from strength to strength and causing some incredible bracket upsets. Marge has solidified his faith in his Cloud and continues to learn and grow as well as take on the task of regularly taking games and even sets against players he once struggled against. If his practice continues, we expect to see some great movement from him.”
10. MaxKiNG - Best Placing: 3rd, Win Rate: 39%, Best Match Up: 12 - 1, Noticeable Wins: RNGeoff and LargeMarge
“Our reigning TO supreme comes in at a solid 10th ranking this season. He stands strong as a competitor who consistently made top 8 with some great pools performances to make it through. Guided by his ever trustworthy Palutena, MaxKiNG has shown what a strong dedication can do.”
Please note the KRAW theory names, thanks LargeMarge
BAM 11 Recap
By Max Connell
During 2019 our goal as a Smash scene has been to travel more often to other parts of the state/country. Our scene, while dedicated, is reasonably small and exposure to more play styles is a key factor in improvement. Over the first half of the year this has meant trips to Hobart for Cooldown eSports tournaments, Tassie Fighter Con, our state’s major FGC event, and most recently travelling to Melbourne for Battle Arena Melbourne 11.
The trip started with an early flight and a slow day on Friday before we made it through the line to get our passes. Once inside, we were all astounded at how massive the space was and how many setups there were, creating a feeling of excitement for the weekend to come. Competing from Launceston we had LargeMarge (Cloud), Gerald (Incineroar), RNGeoff (Daisy) and MaxKiNG (Palutena). While none of us made it out of pools everyone played well and leveled up their game. We poured the rest of our support into Hobart’s own Luma, who defied a lot of mainlanders expectations and proved how good we know him to be. Besides Smash, the game we all had in common, the group participated in other events including Pokken Tournament, Rivals of Aether and Dragonball FighterZ.
The weekend overall was quite successful for our scene. We didn’t win or place highly in any events but everyone got a lot out of their matches, exceeded their own individual expectations and cheered very loudly for our fellow Tasmanian’s Luma and Tezz who placed highly in their games of choice (Super Smash Bros Melee/Ultimate and BlazBlue Cross Tag respectively). The experiences we had were amazing and the people we shared them with were even more so. Now we return to our weeklies in Launceston, but we are all hyped to return next year to BAM12!
“I should have bought 4 bananas so I can have one in each pocket,” - Ben “LargeMarge” Gamble
Welcome DT | Luma!
by Max Connell
A dream of ours has finally come true! When Max and I began Down Tilt we had a focus on home grown talent here in Australia but also a keen eye on Tasmania. As we leapt in to the future and began to grow as a scene and eventually an organisation, we had the pleasure of welcoming Pazx to the team.
Pazx worked with us to help foster grass roots Smash in Tasmania and we alongside him worked to build up his own Smash career. And now thanks to the tireless work of the Down Tilt team we are happy to announce that long time friend and fellow Tasmanian, Luma, will be joining us in 2019.
Since the days of S4 we have watched with eager eyes the career and growth of Tomas and after an amazing 2019 which saw him begin with a TFC 4 victory and a 13th place finish at BAM 11, we have come together to help him further his career in Ultimate.
From all of us here at Down Tilt, we welcome DT | Luma!
